The Peasant Princess: Let Him Kiss Me

In the first sermon of the Peasant Princess series, Pastor Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill Church gives an introduction detailing the sexual sin that saturates our culture. Sex can be viewed as either a god, as gross, or a gift. The Bible teaches us that sex is a gift that is to be stewarded wisely.

Come join us Friday, September 26th, at 244 Berding Street in Ferndale for the first message in Mars Hill Church‘s The Peasant Princess series, “Let Him Kiss Me.” Dinner begins at 6:00, teaching begins around 7:00. Childcare will be available.

Death By Love

As I’ve mentioned the last couple of weeks, Pastor Mark Driscoll of Seattle was about to release a new book called Death By Love. I just got an email telling me that it’s in stock at stores now and ready to enjoyed.

Here’s a quick rundown on what the book is about:

Real people. Real sin. Transformed lives. A compilation of heartfelt letters written from a pastor to his people that explains Jesus’ work on the cross.

Death by Love is a unique book on the cross of Jesus Christ. While many books debate the finer points of the doctrine of the atonement, what is often lost are the real-life implications of Jesus’ death on the cross for those who have sinned and have been sinned against. Written in the form of pastoral letters, Death by Love outlines the twelve primary effects of Jesus’ death on the cross and connects each to the life of a different individual.

Driscoll, one of America’s most influential pastors, and Breshears, a respected theologian, help readers understand, appreciate, and trust in Jesus’ work on the cross in a way that will transform their lives. Both deeply theological and intensely practical, this book shows how everyone can find hope through the death of Jesus Christ.

You can also read a chapter, watch an intro video and learn more at the Death By Love website or on their Facebook page .

I’m really looking forward to reading this book and I imagine we’ll have a copy on the book table at Friday Nights pretty soon.

pray like jesus- pt 5- the high priestly prayer, pt 2

In John 17 we find Jesus praying that His people would find joy in the Spirit, mission to do His work, and unity to show His glory. Christians often focus on petty differences, and constantly need to be refocused on the all consuming glory of Christ. If we, individually and corporately, look toward Christ as our example, we will get joy, be compelled to mission, and be unified through our common passion for the glory of God.

Come join us Friday, September 19th, at 244 Berding Street in Ferndale for the fifth and final message in Mars Hill Church‘s Pray Like Jesus series, “The High Priestly Prayer, Pt. 2.” Dinner begins at 6:00, teaching begins around 7:00. Childcare will be available.

Martyn Lloyd Jones on John 17

Last night I mentioned a book on John chapter 17 by a pastor named Martyn Lloyd-Jones. The book is called The Assurance of our Salvation: Exploring the Depth of Jesus’ Prayer for His Own. Google Books has almost the entire 672 page book online that you can read for free or you can purchase it from our favorite online bookstore, WTS Books.

Here’s the description from WTS Books:

In John 17, Jesus prays for His disciples and all believers. Martyn Lloyd-Jones draws out the timeless truths of this passage by looking at why and what Christ prayed and unfolding the majestic themes of our assurance of salvation, our union with God and other believers, and His loving care for us. This renowned preacher also explores the process of sanctification and living godly lives in the world. Specific and practical, he shows how we can respond to the very personal way in which the Spirit helps us live as new creatures in Christ.

More sermons on Ruth- John Piper

Pastor John Piper, who many of us at Friday Nights in Ferndale, recently preached a series of sermons in the UK on the book of Ruth. Since we recently finished the Redeeming Ruth sermon series from Mars Hill Church, I thought these would be a helpful resource.

Pray Like Jesus- Pt 4- The High Priestly Prayer, Pt 1

With the cross approaching, Jesus paused to pray his longest prayer in all of the Scriptures. This prayer, known as The High Priestly Prayer, is recorded in the 17th chapter of the Gospel of John. Therein, we are privileged to listen to the inner dialogue of the Trinity as God the Son speaks to God the Father. This prayer is packed with deep theological and practical implications, such as faithfulness in trial, God’s goodness, God’s personhood, praying for oneself, Jesus’ eternality, His mission, resurrection, the World, the elect, perseverance of the saints, Jesus’ return to heaven, joy, and much more.

Come join us Friday, September 12th, at 244 Berding Street in Ferndale for the fourth message in Mars Hill Church‘s Pray Like Jesus series, “The High Priestly Prayer, Pt. 1.” Dinner begins at 6:00, teaching begins around 7:00. Childcare will be available.
