Friday Nights in Ferndale 06/26/09- Doctrine From False Teachers

Hi there friends!

We hope that you can join us Friday, June 26th, at 244 Berding Street in Ferndale for an evening of community, friendship, challenging Biblical teaching and discussion, prayer for one another, and some  coffee. Dinner/coffee time begins at 6:00.

For our teaching/discussion time (starting around 7:00 pm), we”ll be returning to the 8 Witnesses from 1 & 2 Peter series from Mars Hill Church in Seattle. This week we’ll be looking at an interesting section of Scripture in 2 Peter 2:1-10. In this video sermon, we see that God looks on false teachers with anger and judgment. These false teaches pick off individuals and crush them with a false understanding of God. God provides his word and godly pastors to pick out the wolves, and protect his sheep. We will talk about those scary words like “heresy” and it should be a good time.

Childcare will be available during the sermon and discussion time.

Friday Nights in Ferndale 06/19/09- Doctrine from True Teachers

Hello friends!

We hope that you can join us Friday, June 19th, at 244 Berding Street in Ferndale for an evening of community, friendship, challenging Biblical teaching and discussion, prayer for one another, and some great coffee. Dinner/coffee time begins at 6:00.

For our teaching/discussion time (starting around 7:00 pm), we”ll be returning to the 2 Peter 1:16-21 from Mars Hill Church in Seattle. This week we’ll be looking at . In this video sermon, we see that there are many cleverly devised myths about who Jesus is and what he did. Jesus is the good teacher, and the Bible tells us all about him. We should trust the Bible, its eyewitness authors, and its divine inspiration. We will ask the questions “What are the unique claims that Jesus makes about himself?” and “Where can the truth be found about who Jesus is?”

Childcare will be available during the sermon and discussion time.

A Good Book To Read: Just Do Something

The Friday Nighters like to read books and from time to time, I like to share  book recommendations. You can look at those books on this page.

Today I wanted to highlight a great little book called Just Do Something: A Liberating Approach To Finding God’s Will, written by Kevin DeYoung. I was given this book by pastor/blogger/good guy Justin Buzzard and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

DeYoung (who is senior pastor of University Reformed Church in East Lansing, Michigan) tackles a question that plagues Christians often: “How do I know what God’s will is for my life?”  DeYoung takes the refreshing stance that hyper-spiritual approaches to finding God’s will don’t work. Instead the author counsels Christians to settle down, make choices, and do the hard work of seeing those choices through.

DeYoung accurately points out that Christians like to tinker with everything: church, relationships, jobs, etc. Consequently, they worry that they might not be in God’s perfect will for their lives and often make radical life shifts to hopefully get “back on course with God’s will.” Or—even worse—they don’t do anything, waiting for clear, direct, unmistakable direction from God.

This was a great read; it was brief, biblical, and often humorous. I am glad to recommend it, particularly for young readers in the teens/early 20’s, but the subject matter applies to all ages.

You can also hear a talk that Kevin DeYoung gave on this subject here (mp3).

Also, here’s an interview that the Vitamin Z blog did with DeYoung regarding this book.

Friday Nights In Ferndale 06/12/09- Faith In Your New Birth

We would love to have you join us Friday, June 12th, at 244 Berding Street in Ferndale for an evening of community, friendship, challenging Biblical teaching and discussion, prayer for one another, and some zinging (and I mean that in a good way) coffee. Dinner/coffee time begins at 6:00.

For our teaching/discussion time (starting around 7:00 pm), we will tune in once again to the Trial: 8 Witnesses from 1&2 Peter series from Mars Hill Church in Seattle. This week we’ll be looking at 2 Peter 1:5-15. This section of Scripture builds on Peter’s opening remarks (justification and regeneration, which we discussed last week). In response to God’s grace, Christians work together with God–not for our salvation but rather so that we will experience and enjoy the fullness of the salvation that has already been given to us.

Childcare will be available during the sermon and prayer time.

Friday Nights in Ferndale 06/05/09

Regeneration

We would love to have you join us Friday, June 5th, at 244 Berding Street in Ferndale for an evening of community, friendship, challenging Biblical teaching and discussion, prayer for one another, and some amazing coffee. Dinner/coffee time begins at 6:00.

For our teaching/discussion time (starting around 7:00 pm), we will tune in once again to the Trial: 8 Witnesses from 1&2 Peter series from Mars Hill Church in Seattle. This week we’ll be looking at 2 Peter 1:1-4 . In this video sermon, entitled “Faith In Your New Birth,” Pastor Mark Driscoll asks the very simple but very important question “How do I know that I am a Christian?” and looks at the topic of what is know as the new birth, or regeneration.

We will probably have childcare available during the sermon and prayer time, but there is a chance that we won’t. Either way, feel free to bring your kids!

Friday Nights in Ferndale 05/29/09- Humble Christians

We would love to have you join us Friday, May 29th, at 244 Berding Street in Ferndale for an evening of community, friendship, challenging Biblical teaching and discussion, prayer for one another, and some delicious coffee (we hope that last week’s coffee drought will only be a one week hiccup!). Dinner/coffee time begins at 6:00.

For our teaching/discussion time (starting around 7:00 pm), we will tune in once again to the Trial: 8 Witnesses from 1&2 Peter series from Mars Hill Church in Seattle. This week we’ll be looking at 1 Peter 5:1-5. In this video sermon, entitled “Humble Christians,” we learn that humility is central to the life of an obedient Christian. God came to earth as Jesus- in a humble state- showing grace and patience with his people. The Bible calls Christians similarly to imitate their Lord and shed their pride. As John Calvin said, “If you ask me concerning the precepts of the Christian religion, first, second, and third, and always I would answer, ‘Humility.’”

Childcare will be available during the sermon and prayer time.

Friday Nights in Ferndale 05/15/09- Humble Pastors

We’d love to have you join us Friday, May 15th, at 244 Berding Street in Ferndale for another evening of community, friendship, challenging Biblical teaching and discussion, prayer for one another, and some delicious coffee. Dinner/coffee time begins at 6:00.

For our teaching/discussion time (starting around 7:00 pm), we will return to the Trial: 8 Witnesses from 1&2 Peter series from Mars Hill Church in Seattle. This week we’ll be looking at 1 Peter 5:1-5. In this video sermon, entitled “Humble Pastors,” Pastor Mark Driscoll preaches about the necessity for all pastors to be filled with humility. Pride is one of the most dangerous traits for a pastor to have. Pastors who are not proud, and not humble, don’t image Jesus the way they need to to lead the people the way Jesus would have them to.

Childcare will be available during the sermon and prayer time.

Friday Nights in Ferndale 05/08/09- Suffering to Worship

suffering-christ-7

Hello friends!

We hope that you can join us Friday, May 8th, at 244 Berding Street in Ferndale for another evening of community, friendship, challenging Biblical teaching and discussion, prayer for one another, and one swell cup of coffee. Dinner/coffee time begins at 6:00.

For our teaching/discussion time, we will once again be tuning into the Trial: 8 Witnesses from 1&2 Peter series from Mars Hill Church in Seattle. This week we’ll be looking at 1 Peter 4:12-19. which is the culmination of Peter’s teachings regarding suffering as a magnificent opportunity to grow as a worshiper of Jesus Christ. In this video sermon, entitled “Suffering to Worship,” Pastor Mark Driscoll tells us that trials come in many shapes and sizes—but they are not all the same. Some suffer like Jesus and have their faith tested and proven. Others suffer because they’ve sinned and they are just seeing the fruit of their wrong doing.

Childcare will be available during the sermon and prayer time.

Hope to see you there!

Friday Nights in Ferndale 05/01/09- Suffering to Serve

 idolatry

We hope that you would join us Friday, May 1st (holy cow, it’s May already!), at 244 Berding Street in Ferndale for another evening of community, friendship, challenging Biblical teaching and discussion, prayer for one another, and an amazing cup of coffee. Dinner/coffee time begins at 6:00.

For our teaching/discussion time, we will be tuning into the Trial: 8 Witnesses from 1&2 Peter series from Mars Hill Church in Seattle. This week we’ll be looking at 1 Peter 4:1-11. In this video sermon, entitled “Suffering to Serve,” Pastor Mark Driscoll preaches on how it’s much easier to recognize the idols of other cultures than our own, We easily recognize that we shouldn’t give our time, treasure, and talent to a wooden statue- but we fail to see that we may worship sex, money, power, independence, or comfort. We hope to discuss our tendencies to make an idol out of pretty much anything and how looking to Jesus is our only rescue from the bondage to the good things that God has made for us to enjoy- not worship. Would you consider joining us?

Childcare will be available during the sermon and prayer time.
